The Love Story Of A Born Loser!

1965’s Baby The Rain Must Fall sees Steve McQueen as a tortured rockabilly/honky tonk singer (“Henry Thomas and his Rockabillies!”) recently paroled from prison.  He reunites with his wife (Lee Remick of Days of Wine and Roses fame) and young daughter.  He tries to walk the line and, unsurprisingly, fails.  McQueen broods and Lip-Synchs passionately and earnestly (if obviously).  The film is clearly trying to emulate some of the other strange, respected dramas of the day like A Face in The Crowd, Baby Doll, or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but just doesn’t have the gravity it thinks it does.  Still, it is a fun, pulpy, odd little B movie, worth watching just to see a young McQueen brooding and raging in full-on delinquent mode.
